Like 16 year-olds everywhere, Lovetta Conto loves fashion.  However, unlike many a typical teen, her love of fashion flourished in a refugee camp in Ghana, where she and her father had fled the brutal civil war in her native Liberia when she was just four. And now she is helping fellow young survivors with her for benefit accessories business: Akawelle jewelry (as in also known as - aka - wel'le, or love).  Using the spent bullet casings that still liberally sprinkle the streets of Liberia, she melts the top half and molds it into a leaf-shaped pendant, leaving the bottom of the bullet as is. "This part is not melted down. I think it's important to have part of the actual bullet untouched, to remember what it was like before," explains the aspiring fashion designer. "I chose the word LIFE to be inscribed into the leaf to remind myself that new life can begin after hardship. It is even possible for new life to arise from something as terrible as war."

Strongheart_house_liberia As part of The Strongheart Fellowship, a program for gifted youth in the developing world which focuses on entrepreneurship and activism, the money Lovetta raises through the sale of her jewelry will support other young people displaced by war through child slavery, abduction by rebel armies, orphaned by AIDS, and extreme poverty. A war-ravaged former beach hotel on the Liberian coast is currently being transformed into Strongheart House, an online but off-the-grid green haven designed to be an international center for healing and learning. Six of the young people moving in are from one of the refugee camps in Ghana where Lovetta lived for nine years. "The camp is closing and I want to help give them a beautiful place to live and grow."

Lovetta_conto_liberian_war_surviv_2 Not surprisingly, Lovetta was recently nominated as a finalist in the 2008 International Children's Peace Prize, sponsored by the KidsRights Foundation, to be awarded next week by Desmond Tutu at the Hague.

I can't even tell you how amazing it has been to soak up the California sun for the last couple days. San Diego is such a cool city. Sometimes I fantasize about what it would be like to live here.

Yesterday, we hopped on the trolley and hit up Fashion Valley. It's unlike any mall that I have ever been to in my entire life. Imagine: Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and Barneys all in the same place. Not to mention an absolutely massive Victoria's Secret and Sephora, plus pretty much any other store that you could possibly imagine. We hit every one of them. Despite the current state of the economy down south, shoppers were out in full force. Elbows were flying as people all seemed to be in search of the ultimate deal. The sales and bargains were abundant- from the denim, shoes and handbags in the department stores to Louis Vuitton, Coach and Gucci.

Barneys proved to be my most successful stop of the day. I found the MARC by Marc Jacobs Dr. Q Lil Riz bag that I've been lusting after. To my delight, it was marked down to more than 50% off, and so was the matching wallet. Knowing full well that the chances of ever seeing that combo at a price so low again were slim to none, I did what any Marc Jacobs loving girl would do. I bought them. The perma-grin hasn't left my face since my big purchase.

After a yummy dinner with the girls this evening, we ordered some chocolate covered strawberries to go. Then we put on our pajamas and all got together in one hotel room to watch Britney: For The Record. Not surprisingly, I got totally emotional. I just want to give Britney a big hug.

Tomorrow, the "vacation" part of my trip ends and the "business" part begins. While the main focus of the ad is about LeBron and his latest sneaker, he will not be alone. Hicks will all appear in the 30 and 60-second television showing more shots and faces than the original 15 second spot we posted before.

This ad will air nationally on Thanksgiving Day during the NFL games on CBS and Fox and also on other TV stations such as ABC, ESPN, BET and MTV.
