The Vienna Club Scene is growing fast over the last 2 years with new Nite Outs like My bitch Club which we featured in our first part of this City Club Series. In Part Two it´s all about “lesstalkmorerock”, a fab nite from 2 stylish Girls which decided to DJ due an extremly emotional Moment at the Primavera Festival in Barcelona.
We´ve talked with one of them about Vienna Venues, Sex and Partying, Fashion and more at the second Part of our big Coverage of the Austrian Capitol Cities Nightlife.
(Our favourite stylish´n´sexy Vienna Club Promoter,
Sophia and Babsi from lesstalkmoresex...uhm..rock;)
introduce yourselves to our readers: Sophia and Babsi from lesstalkmoresex...uhm..rock;)
lesstalkmorerock is barbara "babsi" schellner , born and raised in vienna and me, sophia hoffmann (solo dj name "picky bitch"), i am originally from munich, germany, but moved to vienna 4 years ago. as babsi is right now on her way to a 1-month-thailand-trip i will do the interview for both of us...(ahhh,jealous!!!!)
since when do you promote “less talk more rock”, as i´ve seen that you´ve done often change the venue
we started to dj together under the name "lesstalkmorerock" 3 years ago (after we decided to start djing together during an extremely emotional and drunk situation while watching new order at the primavera festival in barcelona)in smaller venues like schikaneder, transporter a.s.o. and had our first appearances at private parties and friend´s club events. we did our first club at "wirr untergrund" 2 years ago , which was only planned as a one-time-thing, but was so sucessful, that we turned it into a monthly club, "die orgie". then, in autumn 2006 we got an offer from the badeschiff, where we did the "schiffsschraube"-club until summer 2006, parallel with "die orgie", means 2 clubs a month. this became a little bit too stressful, so after a summer-break we decided to go on with the cosy little "orgie"(wirr untergrund is only a 150 people venue)monthly and do the "schiffsschraube" only every 2 months. as we got an offer from the "fluc wanne" and liked it, we moved there but kept the name "schiffsschraube".
“lesstalkmorerock” is more focused on theme events and dress up things. is it a good strategy to be different to the loads of other club nites which are dominate vienna these days?
well, we really never saw it as a strategy, we only liked the idea and wanted to do something like that from the beginning, and fortunately it seems to work out very well :) and viennese people love to dress up and follow our instructions, hohoho..
if i have a look to your promotion campagins to your nites, there are often sexual terms used. like “geil dich ein” or “lesstalkmorerock – the orgy”. does sexuality play an important role at “lesstalkmorerock”? i mean, both of you are feminine and also the djs are most time djanes;) any message behind that?
mhm, well i think this is all-sophia-shit, i always loved to talk about sex a lot, even before i started having sex, so it´s not meant to be oh-so-provocative , it just feels normal to use these terms and for i think sex is a basic need for all of us, sexuality naturally comes along with partying, no? i think our parties do have a sexual spirit in a way and i love to watch people making out on the dancefloor and, if i feel like it, join them. we are not hardcore-feminists, equalisation should be so normal we don´t have to think about it anymore, but if we have female djs (by the way, we hate the word djane, we are not tarzan´s girlfriends on turntables..),we have them because they are good and fit in the party concept, by the way, we also had lots of male djs , too. it´s the same for my thursday club at the flex café (picky bitch´s box). i have a female dj guest every week and every single week there are guys watching us as if we were a panda babies in the zoo, it should be a usual thing to see girls behind the dj desk......someday...
the vienna club scene raised and grow over the last 2 years. if i´ll do an club scene overview, i can see clearly influencecs by trash club london or boombox london or the legendary trash club. would you say that these nite outs were also influences for “lesstalkmorerock”?
no, not really. for my part i can only say i didn´t even know so much about the existence of these clubs when we started, also never been there, perhaps we only got an indirect influence from reading magazines or from the music, but 99 % of the ideas came from ourselves..
is there a competition out there in vienna at the moment? i mean...do you compete with nites like my bitch club or wrckd etc or is all one big family?
i guess it´s more the family thing. the scene is very small and we all want to live in peace next to each other. by the way, we experienced that we also can have lots of folks if there´s another event, like fm4 fest the same night. we don´t worry so much about that.
as i´ve asked you before, i think fashion is a focus of your club. so lets talk about our weblog´s no1 focus, fashion and style. what’s your fashion staple? describe your style and shopping mindset?
i am used to not having much money, so my style is a mixture of vintage/fleamarket stuff, really cheap shit ( tally weill, c&a etc.) and for parties/concerts outfits friends who are designers/stylists create for me/us. we also borrow stuff to each other a lot. a few years ago i had a much more trashy punky style but it became more glamourous , i love to wear dresses, all kinds of dresses ,dresses, dresses..
and who or what inspire you in fashion? any favourtite designer?
babsi once said, that if she could afford it she would only walk around in marc jacobs dresses:) she is also very much into 50ies style, audrey hepburn dresses, dots dots dots..
i don´t have a favorite designer, i read fashions magazines and get my inspirations but that´s it.
are you into the whole fashion week thing which is currently happen in new york city for fall winter 08.09?
well, we are both yellow press victims and interested in which starlet sits next to the catwalk and things like that, but we are not complete fashion victims, no. we know what´s on but it´s not soo important.
“lesstalkmorerock” often changed the venue...what venue was the best place to held that club nite since you´ve started out and what about the old legendary vienna spots like the “flex”?
we only changed once(!) as you can see in the answer to qu.2. every venue has/had it´s pros and cons, there´s not one favorite. as i am regularly djing in flex and flex café i still like it a lot. it has an amazing sound system , so it´s really fun to dj there , well, they could try out new things/clubs, they seem to be a little bit too anxious about that, but as we all know it still works!
one thing which i really miss in vienna, is a website where i can get a weekly overview about the action at the nite outs. something like dirtydirtydancing.com ok, there is florians shootingmusic.com, but this site haven´t a focus only on club nites and there is no alistair allen out there, which is also a trendsetter in the london scene with his pix and well known beyond the island. would you say that a site like this would be kinda help to promote your nite outs?
sure, every now and then i hear friends talk about doing something like that, but by now we don´t have anything like that. flo, a good friend of ours, is only into photography, but with that he documents things in a way, which is great. "partyspam" is very subjective with the dates they publish, well, somebody should do something.... at the moment you have to be on myspace to get all the informations..
matt from numu meant that the vienna scene is really underrated on an international focus. so he started out with a plattform called “weloveviennamotherfckr”. do you think that this kind of local patriotism is a good thing for the vienna scene, or wouldn´t it be better to build a strong network with other cities? like a vienna / london achse or vienna / nyc or something else?
i think both. a little bit of patriotism(even if i don´t like the word so much..perhaps cause i´m german) is fine, cause there are a lot of things going on in music, fashion , art ..and only by now people, from other countries(thanks to myspace), seem to realise that. i am really proud that i am/was part of that "welovevienna"-thing as a member of lesstalkmorerock/the girls feat. boy/menstruation monsters. we started networking from the beginning, we had dj/band exchanges with hamburg, berlin, munich, zürich, ...at our next "schiffsschraube" we will have a band and a dj-team from berlin, i think our vienna/berlin axis is the strongest at the moment.a ny axis is much more difficult, cause we wouldn´t have teh money to do exchanges right now, but sounds great! i can only speak as a musician, it´s still so hard to get out of austria, even if you have a record label here, even if you have airplay a.s.o. , but slowly things are getting better, it´s all about contacts..i can only say: if you love vienna, stay here -let´s show the world how cool we are and work on this!
last but not least...what are your future plans with “lesstalkmorerock” etc?
haha, this is a big secret. there will be changes soon but we don´t want to talk about it right now. you will notice it when the time has come..
